Selling at a Southern California swap meet
Southern California has more flea markets than any other part of the country, and they divide into two quite different businesses. Open-air swap meets sell space by the day, often first-come, and suit a vendor who wants to test what moves without committing to anything. Indoor marketplaces lease a booth by the week or month, which costs more up front but lets you leave stock in place and build repeat customers.
Published day rates in the region run from $9 at the cheapest markets to $300 for a premium reserved space. California generally requires sellers at swap meets and flea markets to hold the appropriate seller’s permit. Qualifying purchases for resale can be made without sales tax when properly documented with a valid resale certificate.
